Volunteering

Volunteering

We welcome anyone who would like to come to visit us and give their time to helping at Hope House. Volunteers are a huge help to us and volunteering can also be an incredibly rewarding experience for you. Whether you are looking to volunteer for a few days during your travels or to stay with us for a few weeks or months, you are very welcome. We understand that you may have a lot of questions ahead of your trip so are happy to try to give you as much help and information as possible.

Ahead of your visit

In order to volunteer with us we will ask you to complete a short form, provide references and a certificate of good conduct from your home country. We apologise for the bureaucracy, but the welfare and safety of our babies is our top priority. If you have any questions with any of the paperwork, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Travelling here

Nairobi is a very easy place to get to from almost anywhere in the world and Hope House is only a 30 minute drive (depending on the Nairobi traffic!) from the airport. We have a wonderful taxi driver who has driven visitors for many years now and we would organise for him to meet you at the airport on arrival if you wish.

A visa is required to enter Kenya, please check the requirements for each nationality before you arrive.

We recommend that you check the suggested vaccinations for Kenya, as well as antimalarial medication – particularly if you intend to travel out of Nairobi during your visit.

Accommodation

We have a small cottage onsite for volunteers that is basic but comfortable. Lunch is provided but you would need to arrange your own breakfast and dinner. The Hope House driver can take you to nearby shops to buy provisions.

We do charge a small amount to stay in the cottage which helps to cover the cost of rent and utilities. The cost is £10 per person per night.

Alternatively we can arrange for you to stay nearby with a host family. They can provide breakfast and dinner, as well as laundry services etc. The cost varies, but is usually approximately £20 per person per night.

Your Visit

While you are here, you will be expected to be involved with many aspects of life at Hope House – from feeding the babies, to helping in the kitchen, around the home or just giving the kids a bit of extra attention – it is always busy with 24 little ones, so you can be a huge help!

We don't expect you to spend 24/7 at Hope House, you will probably want to see a bit of Kenya as well! We can suggest places to go or things to do, please just ask and we would be happy to help.
